Jin: Glad to see you too. Today is happy Sunday! Min: Actually it's not a happy ________ to me. I'm so bored now!

Jin: How about going on a picnic to the park?

Min: Actually, I like _______ activities more than __________ activities.

Jin: No, I don't like coffee and I want to do active things!

Min: We have to make an agreement!

Jin: Yes, we need to find an indoor and ________ activity!

Min: Oh, I've got an __________!

Let's have a party with our friends in our house!

Jin: That's a wonderful idea!

Min: Let's _______ our friends.

Jin: I'll send messages to them!

Min: Today is the best holiday I had!

Main Activities

  1. fill in the blank of the cartoon. (simple words or phrases)

  2. make a group of 5 and debate about the answers they thought. (There are example answers, but the important part is to encourage the students to find their own answers, so if the words in the blank are not awkward, we can admit as an answer.)

  3. volunteer and talk about the answer with other friends. (※ Be careful not to laugh or make fun of other friends' answer.)

  4. Go back to the group and talk about the following themes (choose one) ● What do you do when you are bored? ● Are you an outdoor person or an indoor person? ● Let's write invitation cards to friends who you want to invite.

The main aim of this activity

: There are mainly 2 different aims in this lesson.

First, in the linguistic part, I want to enhance students' inference ability in English dialogue. In the first blank, you can infer the greeting phrase that is usually used such as "Long time no see" Before the third blank you can see Jin saying "Today is happy Sunday". The students can infer and fill in the blank (ex.day, Sunday, weekend, etc) These two are examples of Enhancement in linguistic order. Also, by having a discussion with the related themes, students can enhance their English speaking ability. Discussion with other friends can make students use diverse words and lower their pressure about saying in a foreign language. Volunteering and saying his or her opinion in English also helps this.

Second, in the social and creative aspect, students can get more creative ideas by sharing their opinions. For example, from the first question: What do you do when you are bored? Students can share their various ideas and give feedback or personal opinions about that method. Also, from the third question: How would you act if you have different opinions with your friend? By sharing their solution about confrontation of different thoughts, students can learn what the desirable attitude is and enhance their sociability. Imagine a situation that one student presents an inappropriate answer (ex. I stick to my opinion and bother my friend until he/she gives up.) Other friends can give feedback about this solution and tell better methods to solve the problem.

Reflection

: My overall aim of the English lesson is "Catch two birds with one stone" I won't only focus on linguistic abilities such as vocabulary, grammar, and so on. In my personal opinion, there are lots of things that are more important than English learning, such as Creative, Critical thinking, and Learning Social Rules. I wanted to combine these skills with English education, and I believe this task was the most satisfying result of my aim. Though, I still need some improvement like making more creative and new content to attract the attention of students, I am very pleased with my outcome which is influenced by our Technology Enhanced Language Teaching class.

I love your comic! It has diverse backgrounds, emotions, and well-made story with appropriate gestures. However, looking at your student profile, I am worried that your comic and the activities might be a little bit challenging. Your activity requires a deep process of thinking, knowledge of diverse expressions, and cognitive skills. I think for the first grade of elementary students will be capable of easier tasks like understanding the story, learning vocabulary for a certain situation. I think debating, and filling in too many blanks would be a little bit difficult for them despite the level of language you have used to create the comic. I would like to suggest you to either change the student profile, or the contents…
